[...] Of course, much of those depend upon people being able to talk civilly which often times can't happen in the heat of the break-up emotion. All the more reason, that couples should talk and develop an "exit strategy" while things are good. Many problems can be avoided by creating a domestic partnership agreement and registering as domestic partners if your state allows.
Great stuff. One other benefit of registering as a domestic partner is that a corporation may ask for it in order to gain access to same sex couples benefits (which mine did).

Always an added myriad of things for us to consider until such time as "all people are equal" in the eyes of the law....
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Nina,
Thanks, great post. I didn't know it was an option to register as domestic partners in California. I wonder if other states have this option, and whether hetero couples can register too.

When my (male) partner and I went to an attorney who specializes in unmarried family law to get our wills, powers of attorneys, and advance health care directives drawn up, she spent almost an hour trying to convince us to just get married already since we have that option. We were pretty surprised.

I'm hoping for a sea change in the marriage equality movement, taking the focus away from marriage as a goal. I'd rather see some kind of secular or civil union option for same sex and heterosexual couples that gives all the rights and responsibilities of marriage without the christian connotations of the word marriage.

Just my two cents.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
