[...] The cost of starting a family is astronomical, no matter which route you take. Nina has published several posts about the lengths we take to bring children into our lives. I did a double take at some of the figures she mentions. Despite the high price tag, I believe children are worth every penny.
[...] So, what does this wage gap that has existed forever and a day say about our progress in the workforce? More importantly, what does this mean to the intelligent and achievement oriented lesbians who not only want to get ahead in their careers but more importantly have fulfilling lives and financial freedom? I suppose the problem only further compounds itself if the lesbian couple decides that one of the Mom’s should stay home and raise children. That’s a hard enough proposition for anyone in today’s times but for this example, it is a double whammy. First, the couple spends massive amounts of money conceiving or adopting the child and then are faced with even more cards stacked against them as they build the household finances. Don’t even get me started about the whole inability to file taxes jointly as a married couple which packs a further monetary whack along with the additional legal gymnastics and fees required to protect your family. [...]
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

[...] This is an issue that is top-of-mind these days as Jeanine and I proceed with the baby-making process. In my relationship with Jeanine, I'm the legal equivalent to Heather Poe. When we finally have our baby, I'll have to ask the State of California to grant me a second-parent adoption.
[...] We're still not pregnant but throughout our baby-making attempts Jeanine has sat in numerous waiting rooms surrounded by mommies-to-be. She has already told me that when she is pregnant and showing that she wants to start wearing a wedding ring. Her reasoning surprised me a bit. She said that it's because she doesn't want to walk around looking like an unwed mother.
I wish you all the best. It can be expensive, but all worth it if you end up with a little baby at the end.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Best of luck. My partner and I did IVF, with me donating the egg to her. Luckily, the company I worked for at the time offered DP benefits and IVF coverage, so all we had to pay for was the sperm and the court order. (My company would have covered adoption expenses, but we decided to go for a pre-birth parentage order naming us both as parents from Day One.) Our son is now three, and the light of our lives.

I posted a fairly frugal list of baby-gear recommendations a while back, if you're interested:

Covers the basics, but tries to make sure you have enough left over for the college fund.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
