[...] What particularly struck a note with me was the targeted outreach to college students, to get them indebted early and potentially keep them indebted their entire lives. I remember being a senior in college and signing up for credit at the booths set up by Visa, Mastercard and others. Sign up and get a free t-shirt! Would that I realized at the time I would soon find myself in nearly $40,000 of credit card debt, which affected my job choices, family decisions, and housing opportunities. I consider myself an intelligent person, but I was actually a very easy mark. It got me in to serious debt!
[...] I spent much of my early 30s getting out of debt, as my first Queercents post explained. I spent my middle 30s getting situated financially: that included saving for the down payment for my first house, which I finally bought in 2004; setting up a 529 college fund for my niece; and contributing in earnest to my 401(k) retirement fund.
Thank you for a great posting!!! As a 35 year old gay man, I am having to take on the responsibility of parenting myself and learn lifes lessons through the wisdom and experience of others before me. This posting really helps..
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

I had never heard the term "staycation" before- an apt term for something my partner & I do at least once a year for big home projects. We once renovated our kitchen in 10 days during such a time- for under $2000 with all new cabinets, fixtures, etc.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
