Thanks for finding "The Wal-Mart Effect," and thanks for the long, thoughtful reaction here.

Anyone who is curious can read excerpts from the book, at the low, low Wal-Mart price of "free," at the book's website:

While I am not staunchly "anti" Walmart, I try to focus my purchasing power on local rather than national vendors to support small business. That being said, I also might not know as much about the small vendor as I would about the more corporate shopping venues- so which would be worse- supporting a local nasty or a multnational conglomerate one? I have friends who would rather go without than buy anything Walmart- but I don't take it that far- I try to keep it to a bare minimum.

I always say- the best I can do as a lesbian parent is to subversively raise happy, independant, and well cared for kids. If it occasionally (say once or twice a year) requires buying something for the family at Walmart, so be it.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

It makes total sense to me that Wal-Mart is as huge as it is but the problem runs way deeper than we might suppose. Our "experience" economy is based in large part in the purchasing and performance of stories. Wal-Mart is where people go to get "actual value". If we were less captivated by Starbucks and Structure, we'd have less of a need for Wal-Mart.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
