Both my husband and my Dad work for the government and have use/lose days. My DH (military) is reminded of his use/lose days every month as it is printed on his paystub. He works long hours, days, weeks, months and over the past six years hasn't taken that much leave. They are allowed to roll over some leave, but my DH currently has a lot he has to use. He got excited as we are planning our next year's vacation already - until he remembered that the vaca we are planning isn't until November, and his leave has to be used by Oct 1. LOL
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

In California the "use it or lose it" rule doesn't apply so vacations do rollover but they don't accrue.

but i know a friend in kansas who only gets a week and she has to use it.

i had the same mentality before -afraid of losing my job for taking vacation. my mom has that theory too. but even a few days off for a mini trip is worth it. i came back excited and rejuvinated.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

"A while back Nina suggested people take long weekends as mini-vacations if they couldn't get away for a stretch, which I think is a terrific idea"a number of small breaks rather than one huge one, and probably less disruptive to your work."

Which can be a good idea in some places- but not where I work. If a full week is taken off, responsibilities get divided among those who will still be working. If you take only a day or two off, you are expected to ramp up and do your own work before and after the day off- which usually means putting late hours to get the work done. The counterproductive vacation plan! So basically by being a good steward of my time and vacation, once again, I get screwed.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
