I prefer not to move so often, but whenever I do, I go through the whole purging cycle. Because I don't want to move all that stuff if I don't have to. Plus selling stuff off helps to finance the move. And then I purge some more when I get into my new place and start fresh. I've never had a whole house worth of stuff, though, so that makes it a little different. Only recently have I acquired more than a bedroom's worth of furniture and the odd bookshelf. You're totally right about the attics. I never even thought about that.

The other thing to think about is how much the item you are storing would cost to replace if you were not renting the stoarge unit. My sister was spending $350/month for one of these glorified garages- to store about $800 of nothing special furniture and books. In a little less than 3 months time, it would be cheaper to throw away everything and rebuy at a later date. WHen I pointed this out to her, she scoffed and said "But these are MY things- if I had to replace them it wouldn't be the same." Ah- the folly of "ownership"...
