[...] Meanwhile, The Weight of Money hosted the 6th Carnival of Ethics, Values and Personal Finance. One of the posts that caught my eye was cheating on your taxes by Queercents, which had a few interesting views on taxes.
Tax cheating is never worth it.

My dad is a right winger and many moons ago, he got under the notion that if he had his own business (Amway, 'nuff said), all his work would be business related and he paid no taxes for three years.

When it caught up with him, he owed so much money it was ridiculous. To this day, he doesn't have enough to retire on because so much of his income had to go right to the IRS for so many years.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Cheating on your taxes is morally wrong.

We may disagree with a lot of things that the government does, but we don't have the right to sneakily try to avoid paying our taxes because of it. The honest thing to do, the thing with integrity, is to get politically active and fight to change tax laws so they are more fair.

It sounds to me like that lesbian and her ex husband are both cheating -- him by not filing or paying anything, and her by pretending to still be married. If they get caught, they could face huge fines, or if really jerks about it, prison time.

Incidentally, the US Department of Justice has a criminal tax division that prosecutes people for these kinds of things. A lot of them are crazy right wing militia types, but some are doctors and other "ordinary" arrogant people who think they are above the law.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
