[...] Moorea at Queer Cents writes that “people use the phrase ‘A Trip to Tahiti’ in jest. Tahiti implies the unthinkable, unaffordable, ultimate luxury.
Take it from someone in the South Pacific - you could save even more money by going to an alternative Pacific island. All French Polynesian islands - Tahiti is just one of the islands in French Polynesia, and there is also the island system of New Caledonia - are known to be very expensive to visit.

Western Samoa, Vanuatu, and Rarotonga/the Cook Islands are safe, enjoyable, and far less expensive alternatives. (Tonga is boring and has been dangerous lately; Fiji has also been dangerous; and the islands of Micronesia are not budget destinations simply because it costs so much to get to any of them.) Like Tahiti, Western Samoa's Polynesian culture incorporates some traditional roles for gay men/crossdressers. The Moon Handbooks guide to the South Pacific has everything a traveler needs to know about this area, including political and queer rights ups and downs.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
