Here I thought I was the only person left on the planet using MSExcel to track his entire financial picture--including his taxes. If you are really handy with Excel, you can utilize it to track expenses that have been paid or unpaid as well as income that has or has not been received. In this way, you can determine your net worth now--beginning balance-paid expenses+received income--and you can forecast your next worth--begin balance-all expenses+all income. In addition, when categorizing your expenses, you can include your tax and medical withholdings each paycheck. Then, you can create a simple table to do your tax return.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

[...] I will be talking about this in more depth when I write about creating a realistic budget. For now, take a look at the last 12 months of expenses and see where your money is going. If you don’t have any way to go back historically and track all your expenses, take a ballpark figure of the last 12 months using your checkbook register, credit cards, and bank statements. Then, going forward, start tracking every dime you spend. There are some good online tools for doing this as well as ones you can download.
[...] Drinking drains my wallet, and I’m almost embarrassed to say how much. I like fine microbrews and good wine; I’m a bit less discriminating with spirits, so I save money there. Through tracking my expenses, I’ve learned that I spend between $30-$50 per week on alcohol. Granted, half of the money goes to overpriced bar and restaurant drinks, but if you take the median to project spending by the year’s end, the grand total comes out to $2,080 spent on booze.
[...] The final tally on my expense tracker shows that staying in town wasn’t a significantly frugal choice. In fact, we’re going to have to cut back for the rest of the month to stay on budget. Assuming that we were able to put together a Labor Day escape for a total of $500 (including accommodations, transportation and expenses), we actually only saved 25% of our disposable income by staying in town. How could two frugal guys end up spending so much?
