[...] Welcome back to this discussion of the thriving introvert. I introduced the concept in Part 1 of this series to rally and convince all you introverts that successful networking and self-marketing can become a part of your repertoire with 1) consistent practice and 2) keeping in mind that networking is all about showing people that you care about helping them advance. Now it’s time to dig in with the how and where introverts can network effectively.
It is such a consolation to read all this about introvertedness. Thank you for the encouraging words. I am an introvert and have been trying to fight this for years and years and I didn't become an extrovert. I sometimes feel rejected for the introvertedness. I am glad I have good friends who do accept the introvertedness. I am looking forward to more about introdvertedness. Sorry for my English, I am from the Netherlands.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Although not directly about adults and networking, another good book that contains insights about the neural differences between introverts and extroverts is, "The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child: Helping Your Child Thrive in an Extroverted World" by Marti Olsen Laney.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Looking forward to the next half!

I'm also ridiculously introverted (unless you know me very well, in which case it's hard to get me to shut up...ask my poor introverted husband). I hate the crash after having conversations, especially in groups.

For me, e-mail and online communications are much easier, though often requiring a lot of prep time. Maybe it's because one can take the time to formulate a response instead of having to converse.

And being a receptionist has taught me a lot about phone conversation. Practice, as you say. I worried at first that I was an idiot to take this job, but needed the money. Turns out to be a good growing experience.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

What I've found most beneficial (since I am a raving introvert as well even though people who meet me wouldn't think so...it is all about the recovery time) -- is simply to find ways to connect and be curious. I agree with you about small talk. I don't have time for the cocktail conversation of life. What I do do is to ask questions that will spur interesting discussion. Now THAT I can handle. I've found it not only helps networking be more interesting but helps you sort through who would be a "Fit" in your network and who wouldn't.

Can't wait to read Part 2!~
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

To Pam:

Thanks for your comment. I'm slowly learning that networking can be fun if you're doing it in something that you're passionate about. I also agree sucesss is your head, as I agree with "if you think you can, you can and will." Any introvert is fully capable of successful networking if they want to be and try.

The main reason I was compelled to write about networking and marketing for introverts is because of the stigma associated with the label. Introverted qualities are so looked down upon that almost no one wants to admit they are an introvert. I believe there are advantages to being an introvert that should be recognized. It's my goal to motivate introverts to use those advantages and become successful networkers without feeling bad that they are not naturally inclined like extroverts.

Both introverts and extroverts need practice networking: introverts need a bit more because it's not in their nature. Introverts can become better networkers, but they can't really become extroverts, and I'm not sure why they would want to. It's like converting from gay to straight - it doesn't happen for real.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Being in network marketing i had to "get over" being an introvert. Fortunately when you are passionate about what you're doing and a good check is coming in..... it's much easier to network (and even FUN!) whether you're an introvert or not. Success is in your head. If you think you can..... you can and will. Don't allow yourself to be labeled. You can be what you want to be.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
