Racking up billable hours is not unique to lawyers. Almost all professional services have a form of billable hours (consulting, accounting, therapy). And most jobs have boring parts.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

One reason that I think lawyers are unhappy, which isn't mentioned above, is the hours they are being asked to put in the name of racking up "billable hours." (That and the document review...) Money can help you do a lot of things, but its hard to enjoy that when you are working countless hours, on mind-numbing activities.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Money can make up for a lot, but at some point you look back and see all the stuff you 'wanted' to do, and didn't. That seems more the tragedy. You traded your life for money, and you would pay even MORE to have that life back.

Reminds me of the tv show "The Riches".
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

"So what do you think? Is professional status now linked to ideas of flexibility and creativity instead of the traditional pillars that once made the pursuit of law and medicine so attractive?"

I can tell you that I'm still hearing a lot of resistance and misunderstanding about my future plans to live a blended, flexible career. But that resistance is mostly coming from my Gen. X and Boomer colleagues and peers.

I suspect that as Gen. Y gains a stronger foothold in the marketplace, we'll be seeing this trend of valuing flexibility and creativity bloom more and more.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
