Couldn't agree more! Where i live (NYC) folks in the financial services industry are losing their jobs by the tens of thousands (literally).

I'm considering quitting my job and starting a small business, but may just take a short cut and buy a pre existing one. Any trustworthy sites you can recommend?

I've looked at www.BizTrader.com and BizBuySell.com, any others?
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

This article really speaks to me. I had a bit of a breakdown a while back...walked away from a solid career and went broke...ruined my credit, lost my car, the whole bag of bad stuff. As I struggled to get back I found I could get jobs with ease as I had a great working background...but I could not hold those jobs. After a few of weeks I would find my brain kinda shorting out and I would quit. My solution was to start a business of my own...a retail medical uniform and accessory company. I started with just a few hundred dollars I pulled together and I worked out of my car...2 years later I have opened a store front. I still stress but it is the kind of stress that propels me forward rather than making me want to crawl under a rock.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Paula: Did you see this headline today? Unemployment rate jumps to 5.5 percent in May... corporate jobs are becoming "less safe" as the year moves on. I liked Pam Slim's advice to never mind the recession. A columnist at the USA Today echoes the sentiment:

Would you believe me if I told you that right now is a great time to start a business? Well you should because it's true. Recessions are typically among the strongest times for new business startups.

Consider:
- 16 of the 30 corporations that make up the Dow Jones industrial average got their starts during recessions.
- Disney began during the recession of 1923-24.
- Hewlett-Packard was begun during the Great Depression (in 1938).
- Microsoft began during the 1975 recession.

In fact, it is this tendency of unemployed and under-employed individuals to become more entrepreneurial during recessionary times that creates the steam that moves the economy out of recession. New businesses that begin during a recession create the jobs that move the economy back on track.
