Liza: Great point... although my friends would certainly whine. Jennifer: Another good idea as well. By the way, the Vow to Vote No organization has set up a gift registry to do just what you're suggesting: donate money to fight the ballot initiative instead of gifts!

Here's another suggestion: elope! That's what we're doing--partly because, with my teaching schedule, there's no way we could plan one properly before November, and partly because we want to save money. We're planning a ten-year anniversary party of when we first got together (three years from now!) instead. I'm asking folks to donate money to fighting the ballot initiative in California in lieu of gifts. We ARE going on a honeymoon, spending what we would normally spend on a summer vacation. We are not really into ceremony and ritual; we want this to be a private event--and a financially manageable one. You can get married and just skip the darn wedding!

Another way to keep alcohol costs down is to limit the open bar to beer and wine, and to offer only limited options of those.
