What a difficult thing to try to muddle through at such a young age! Many wishes for a long and happy life! You did a terrific job getting them to forgive your debt. I'm going to write a post about somethings I've done over the years to get my hospital and other medical bills reduced, and I'm going to refer to your post. Thanks for sharing it! You don't have to be in such dire straits to get discounts.

Wow, I'm sorry you had to go through all that. Glad you're OK now though! It still boggles my mind that in this day and age, they can't make this sort of billing process easier to understand or manage. If you visit a doctor's office, s/he should bill you directly. If you get services through a hospital, you should get one bill from the hospital and they should take care of distributing money to surgeons, anesthesiologists, and anyone else who needs a cut. I almost had my credit severely affected for not paying a couple surgeon and lab bills following a surgery - for wrongly believing they had already been paid through my (already very large) payments to the hospital, since the hospital statements outlined the lab services and the surgery on their own bills.
