Liza: Do-it-yourself "felt food" - that's a new one for me... I'll have a lot to learn as a new parent!

FuR: The coating companies advertise that it works on basement floors. I'm sure it will look great. You could sleep on our garage floor.

S: Those are fun tips. My sister is a living example of number three. Her kids are in grade school now, but I'm sure they will be going off to college before she (and her husband) get around to finishing some of those projects started when they were in diapers. I'll have to remember that WD40 trick. Thanks!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

The most complicated projects I've done myself were installing a garage door opener and replacing old wooden windows with vinyl insulated ones. DIY for the garage door opener saved me about $100. The windows saved at least $1000. Just about any project that doesn't require building permits and that can be chipped away at piecemeal on the weekends I'm willing to do. I hire out for things like reshingling the entire roof. Roofing repairs I can and have done myself, but carrying many bundles of shingles up a ladder is way beyond me.

My best tip: do NOT start plumbing projects on a holiday weekend right before all the hardware stores close. Not unless you want to spend a really long time without running water.

My second best tip: WD40 spray lubricant will take duct tape residue off of almost anything. This is very useful if you've used duct tape to hold the edges of your new carpeting down in doorways until you get around to putting those nice finish strips in. Especially if it takes a couple years to get around to those finish strips.

My third best tip: if you move to a fixer-upper when your child is a baby, the projects really will last long enough that someday the child can help you finish them!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

How do you think that epoxy floor would do in a guest room in a basement? We bought it over 8 months ago planning on doing it but have put it off because we weren't sure how hard it would be... :)

I've recently joined a "felt food" craft swap, mostly of other toddler moms. For a couple of dollars in felt and a few more in postage, maybe $10 total, my son gets a dozen different pieces of pretend food. All of it is non-toxic, hand made, and cute.

I had so much fun with it that I'm now organizing a second swap with a different group of moms.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
