I'm somewhat old-fashioned, so, a few years ago, I'd probably always pay on the first date or on several dates. Since then, I've really taken a look at the roles I want to have in a healthy relationship, and I decided each of us always pays his own part unless it's a "treat". It's slightly complicated with gay gender roles. Does the top pay? Does the older/richer guy pay? I can't count the number of times I went on a date with a younger guy and at the end he gave me that hesitant look when the waiter would come and ask "Will you be paying together or separately?" and learned that my date didn't bring any money. I think it just takes all the complication out of the situation just to ask beforehand "Can you afford [the restaurant]?" or "It's not gonna break your bank to go to [this movie], is it?"
