Wow, Roland, that's a lot of taters! I've actually grown potatoes by acident in my compost bin. FYI - even if you throw cut potatoes into the bin, they'll still sprout. But hey, they are the cutest little plants with white blossoms. And you get to eat potatoes when it's all said and done. Who doesn't want that!

Jeff, there is so much you can do, even with limited space. One of the popular gardening concepts in Utah these days (where my dad lives) is the square foot garden. Check out this site to learn more.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Serena: I've always been a fan of "Square Foot Gardening" I think the book just came out in a 25th Anniversary Revised Edition.

One idea I once saw in The Mother Earth News was how to grow Potato's easy....

Take a 1/2 or 3/4 tall 55 gallon barrel and after making drainage holes put a couple of inches of good soil into it and plant your Spuds..then as they start to grow you keep adding more soil leaving just the top of the growth out in the sun until you've filled the barrel to the top.

The barrel is now roots from top to bottom and thats where the potatos grow...feed and water unti the first frost comes along and kills off the tops...now all you have to do to harvest is tip the barrel over and pick up your spoils...If I recall they said you could get as much as 50 lbs of potato's this way without the laborous digging and potential damage to the tubers.
