Andrea: I agree with DivaJean... shopping with intention eliminates a lot of the "buy me, buy me" noise from other items. And as Moorea notes, a good snack helps! Thanks for another wonderful post in this excellent series.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Andrea-great post! I use all of these tactics on a weekly basis. I have another one too! Eat something. I make sure I've had a snack before I go shopping for anything. Physical fullness seems to ward off that psychological emptiness!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Here's my easiest one- don't make shopping a sport or hobby.

Wandering aimlessly in the mall is just an accidental purchase waiting to happen. I stop myself before I even leave the house- what is it I am shopping for and to suit what purpose? I ask this same question before I buy online or buy from a catalog.

Sometimes, when I dig into the depths of the "whys" of my attempts at buying- its like mini psycho drama in my head. For instance, I was eBaying around for early Xmas shopping when I happened upon a cool action figure of Frankenfurter from Rocky Horror. Dirt cheap and ending soon. Why would I want it? To remember the good ol' days when I was somewhat edgy and cool. What purpose would it serve? None really- just a reminder that I once was cool. End of dilemna. I did not buy it as it really had no relevance in my life now.

As for shopping in the mall- what's that? I never go out without practically a written in stone agenda as to what will be bought. It's never in the mall. I buy low end everything- Rescue Mission and such all the way up to Kmart. A big splurge for us is something from Target or JCPenney.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
