Alex, I'm shocked that your friends abandoned you.
Hi Alex - thanks for sharing your story. I also declared bankruptcy, but unlike you, I didn't tell anyone. I have always been a professional and made good on all my debts and I was just too ashamed that I couldn't make it.

When my partner became very ill due to AIDS-related conditions, I needed to quit my job to take care of him. Bills quickly mounted, and help was not there (it would have been if we were poor - but since we had a little money, no one would help. But that is another story!) Needless to say, I tried to keep my head above water for a year but it was too much. My trustee was very nice and understanding but it was a very humbling experience.

I'm glad to say that after 4 years, my partner's health has stabilized and I have been able to return to the professional world. We have retirement funds, extra savings and have just closed on a new house! We are amazed at how quickly life can turn and we are being extra careful in having emergency funds to cover rainy days. We also have a few friends that find themselves struggling now - and all I can tell them is "if bankruptcy is going to be your only option: do it now! The sooner you get it over, the sooner you can get back to pulling your life together"

Thank you!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
