Dating on a Budget: Time for the Farmers Market Stroll
It’s officially spring time! The time when flowers begin to bloom and the allergies kick in. But the best thing about this season, to me, is the farmers market. These entities help so many people on an economic level; I have to suggest that you visit and make it a date while you are at it.
Farmers markets allow local farmers and growers to bring their items to sell. Often times you can find fresh fruits, flowers, vegetables, meats, arts and crafts, handmade jewelry – soap – candles, and baked goods all under one roof. These items are of high quality and low cost. These entities aren’t just for grocery shopping anymore. You can actually spend hours browsing, shopping, and tasting everything in sight. You’ll probably end up with cute gifts for your partner, a great picnic or dinner as well.
The great thing about going to the farmers market is you are supporting the local economy and saving money at the same time. For instance, I bought a bag of peaches (approximately 8 ) at the farmers market for $4. Similar peaches were being sold at the grocery store for $.99 a pound. These peaches were huge; therefore the price could not be beat anywhere in town. These juicy pieces of fruit were picked off the tree the day before and set the stage for a wonderful picnic later that day.
Another perk to frequenting farmers markets are that they are found everywhere: in the middle of a downtown street, parking lots of drive-in movie theatres, or even baseball stadiums. I’ve seen them next to the aforementioned spots but also near amusement parks, historic places, and waterways. It is not uncommon for me to just drive down a street and happen upon a market in full swing. Either way, the settings of farmers markets are usually easily accessible to an area’s other activities.
It is not uncommon for a food competition or even entertainment to be present. The farmers market has a variety of activities for you to participate in. One time, I actually got to participate in the judging of a home design contest. Other times, I have frequented some of the restaurants or food venues inside or nearby. But if you have kids, wouldn’t it be great to show them interesting foods they wouldn’t normally see in the grocery store? It could end up being a great teaching moment as well as quality time with the family.
If you already frequent the market on a regular basis, try looking at it from a different vantage point. Next time you go, relax-take it all in as if this were your first time. Explore the nooks and crannies of the market. I am sure whether you spend the day browsing, shopping, tasting foods you wouldn’t normally eat, or picking out items for a dinner or picnic a farmers market will give you and your date plenty to enjoy.

Tamara: I agree there’s something romantic about the farmers market stroll. Even now, one of my favorite activities that we do almost every Saturday is to buy our fruits and vegetables for the week. We even agreed that after Sam arrived, we’d still make an effort to do this “errand” together as a family… so far, so good.
Tamara, have you been stalking me? Shannon and I take a stroll through the farmer’s market every Sunday morning. It’s a great date!
I love going to the farmer’s market. I saw a show on PBS recently that showed various markets from across the country. It’s really a nice venue for having a good time and enjoying wonderful food. My girlfriend and I should go this weekend. Thanks for the idea.
