Check out the insulation I am using as I go through my 1890's fixer-upper. It is called "Ultra-Touch". It is a natural, pre-consumer recycled cotton batt insulation made from denim. The same company has a natural cellulose fiber, but I got a great deal on some surplus of the cotton batts. They do produce a little dust during installation, and require the walls to be open, but I am repairing, remodeling, and rewiring as I go along, so the walls were going to be open anyway. It also requires a separate bapor barrier. But it has a comparable R-value to fiberglass without the itching and "possible" carcinogenic side effects of glass fibers. In fact, the batts are soft enough that I considered using them as a bed while my bedroom was torn out. Not sure if they're worth the usual price's premium, but for what I paid, they were definitely worth the tiny premium I paid!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Carol, I love this idea of "do no harm" as it relates to the environment. We try to eat as low as we can on the food chain, we've got a really fuel efficient car - I work from home and my partner commutes by bike most of the time - we recycle our gray water . . . The one big step I'm making is switching to reusable menstrual products, like the Lunapad. It's supposed to be cost effective, as well as environmentally fit. But this whole idea of "do no harm" is really pushing me even further in that direction. I'll let you know how it goes.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
