‘œWhen it’s a question of money, everybody is of the same religion.’ ‘“ Voltaire

Newport Beach, CA (November 12, 2007) ‘“ Queercents (http://www.queercents.com), a personal finance blog serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, today announced the launch of its weekly series called God and Mammon.

The series, written by Aundi Howerton, explores the connections and disconnects of money and religion in history and modern-day. Howerton who grew up as a pastor’s kid and ultimately came out as queer will discuss topics in God and Mammon that include:

  • History of Money and Religion
  • History of Tithing
  • Money Attitudes: Small Towns, Red States, and Big Religion
  • Modern Tithing
  • Closeted Conservative Politicians: Using Money and Religion to Make Queers Second Class Citizens
  • Coming Out as a Pastor’s Kid
  • Southeast Asia: An Education in World Religion and Global Commerce
  • Religion and Environmentalism: George Bush’s Push for Green in the Face of the “Axis of Evil”
  • Monetary Implications of Modern “Individualized” Religion
  • Religion Re-entry: Queers Who Find God

Howerton is a poet and fiction writer who recently moved to England to pursue a graduate degree. “The link between money and religion is an interesting and ancient one. Money is a child of the church, literally. Practicing religion arguably has an impact on personal finance, but even without a personal practice, micro and macroeconomics are steeped in the currency of the global states of various religions,” explained Howerton.
