A Weak Foundation
We recently went on vacation and stayed in the home of our host couple. I learned a lot from them about building my foundation wisely.
The couple that hosted us was most entertaining and stressful at the same time. One of the items that stood out was their complete dependence on being the “Joneses” in their neighborhood or at the very least, keeping up with the perceived idea of one.
Though they took an interest in the appearance of their home and yard, it was, in my opinion, an unhealthy one. The reason I say this is that their house may have beautiful paint, flowers and green grass. They seem to worry about the appearance of their home to the detriment of the important parts, the foundation, the plumbing and the general comfort of the home.
They have beautiful furniture, but what enjoyment is it if everything appears to be off limits or uncomfortable? I walked into a beautiful bathroom with gorgeous tile and accessories, but why use it if I am constantly worried about the toilet overflowing or the bathtub leaking.
It is always interesting to see where people put their priorities; because where priorities are on things that are superficial or temporary, it is a good chance that it is the same with their finances.
They eat out at the best restaurants and drive the prettiest cars, but there are cracks forming in their finances. Emergencies situations cause the same ugly face as when you peek beyond the flowers to the cracked foundation. The preparation isn’t there, and when catastrophe hits, the real priorities rise to the surface for them to face.
