Are You Becoming A Seasonal Eater to Save Money?
I wonder how many of us are becoming (or more accurately returning to being) “seasonal eaters”? For example, consider the prices you see for produce that is “not in season” in the US but is in places like South America and flown in.
I was in Publix the other day and they had both fresh peaches and nectarines on sale for $1.99 a pound… $2 off the regular price of $3.99 a pound.
Excuse me??… $4 a pound for peaches and nectarines? Hamburger is cheaper!
Yes they were beautiful and I have no doubt delicious… (as you can tell I saw them but I didn’t buy any to taste but I do trust their produce buyers) they were still out of season and had been flown in from Chile.
And Bananas were 69 cents a pound.
With prices like that are you going back to eating as our grandparents did? Buying fruits and vegetables only when they are “in season” and cheap because of the abundance? Will it make you appreciate a fresh juicy peach a lot more when its only available for a month or two instead of all year long??
LOL… will you learn to can (preserve) your own?

I see you are hopping on the Stretch Your Food Dollar bandwagon. 😉
Always…but at my age “stretching” isn’t always that easy…}:~>
I completely did this tuesday (yesterday). I went to my bank and whole foods because I didn’t want to make two trips since the bank and whole foods were near each other. I went to whole foods and basically bought in season with exception of fish, yogurt, coffee creamer, soy milk, rice, beans, cereal and eggs. Everything else: yams, bananas, apples, bok choy, frozen spinach. My total for all of the things I bought: 45.00. At whole foods none the less. 🙂
oh and i left out red potatoes as well.
I belong to a food coop- you have to work to shop there, and most of the food is organic and local. This means that when I do see peaches in February, I marvel at them like some sort of unnatural wonder. And I know exactly when asparagus season starts. It makes me feel so much more connected to the seasons, and more excited about food.
