Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday
Did you know that in some states you can avoid the malls and get the tax-free items for your back to school purchases online? We found this out from a recent PacSun promotion that was sent to our inbox. The sales tax free days start August 10-11 in Georgia. In Maryland August 12-18. Texas gets a three day weekend to take advantage of no taxes on things such as backpacks starting August 17 and ending the 19th. Finally, Connecticut has tax free days on Aug 19 – 25.
Here are some of the guidelines:
In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on Aug. 17, 18 and 19 ‘“ the state’s annual tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.
Subject to the criteria explained below, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold over the Internet, television or by mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.
