Are you sick of hearing that annoying jingle from the Freecreditreport.com music trio?   I am.   Apparently the Federal Trade Commission is, too.   Today the FTC is launching it’s own public service announcements to help educate consumers about how to truly track their credit reports for free.   According to Ad Week:

Consumers have become increasingly concerned about their credit scores because of the tightened availability of credit. The FTC will promote its site as the only one that offers this information with no hidden fees or trial memberships . . . Despite the musical claims of some TV commercials, the only authorized source to get your free annual credit report under federal law is AnnualCreditReport.com . . . Other sites require users to pay hidden fees or agree to additional services in order to get a free credit report. If consumers don’t cancel the service during a short trial period, they’re likely to pay membership fees. The FTC encourages consumers not to pay for something they can get for free.

You should be checking your credit report at least once every year. You’re entitled by law to view the reports from all three major credit reporting companies for free. So if you haven’t already viewed your credit reports for the year, click over to Annualcreditreport.com and do it today. Then be sure to go through the report with a fine tooth comb and dispute any errors that you notice. You’ll be glad you did.
