Hanging Out at the (Virtual) Mall
“If I don’t stop shopping, I’ll end up a bag lady; a Fendi bag lady, but a bag lady…” — Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw
I believe I’m one of the few women that hate to shop. If I am lured to the mall, it’s because my partner, Jeanine, has dangled the “food” carrot. She learned early on in our relationship that if you promise lunch or snacks, as part of the shopping excursion, there is a good chance I’d come and help carry the bags.
For me personally, the only thing worse than hanging out at the mall is hanging out at the virtual mall. This is what you get when you cross “online social networking” with shopping? Yub.com (which means Young Urban Buyers or BUY spelled backwards) is trying to do just that.
According to the OC Register, “Billed as the first e-shopping mall to connect people and products, Yub’s slogan is ‘You Meet. You Hang. You Shop. We Send the Check.’ Members can view other members’ profiles and photos to socialize and flirt–but those profiles also include product recommendations and opinions. Yubbers can cruise the virtual mall and buy from retailers like Gap, Sephora and Target, earning points, discounts or even cash if they make purchases based on recommendations, or if others make purchases they recommend.”
Hmmm… maybe I just don’t get it. Perhaps, it’s because I’m neither young nor urban. Has anyone signed up? Are you saving lots of money? Are you making new friends?
Ugh, that just sounds gross. At least in a real mall, you can get some exercise, and eat!
