The IRS announced they will further extend the filing deadline for taxpayers affected by the severe weather in the Northeast. They originally announced an extension from the 17th to the 19th. It turns out two extra days will not be enough to get back on track after this natural disaster. The IRS is allowing affected taxpayers to file until midnight, April 26th, 2007.

To provide further guidance, the IRS updated their FAQ section to answer questions such as:

  • Does the extension apply to estimated tax payments?
  • Will interest be waived on payments received after April 17th?
  • Does this mean we have longer to contribute to our retirement accounts?
  • Will filing April 26th trigger an audit?
  • Can I file an extension electronically?
