The Best Frugal Books and Movies
This is my list of books and videos I have read or watched and would recommend:
The Complete Tightwad Gazette
This is the book that got me started about keeping my own list of ways to stay frugal and then moved me into the blogging world and to the blog you are now viewing. So, this book is my inspiration and I have my marked up thoroughly with tabs in different places as well.
Frugal Living for Dummies
This was second book I picked up from the library. I wanted to start out easy and get a little more updated information (2003) and from a different voice. This was helpful for more mainstream ideas.
Living More With Less
I then read this book after I remember mom using the cookbook that Doris wrote (The more with less cookbook) and even though this was published in 1980, it was good to view the ‘˜living with less‘ idea from a more spiritual perspective and learn how it impacts the world.
Below are some of the movies I checked out and had a simple/frugal living idea to them if you want to put them on hold at the library:
The End of Suburbia ‘“ A Documentary about Peak oil, green living
The Prize Winner of Defiance, OH ‘“ A fun movie with Julianne Moore
A Home of Our Own – This has Kathy Bates and Edward Furlong(T2) in it.
The Way Home ‘“ A great Korean movie w/ subtitles about what is important in life
Nobody Knows – A true story from Japan about a mother who abandons her 4 children who show their resilience as the utilities are shut off and starvation sets in
Everything’s Cool – This movie is about the political ‘˜blacking out’ of what scientists have learned about global warming and its impact on what is going on around us.
Maxed Out – A documentary about credit card collectors, legislation, lobbyist and those in debt

I’m with you…”The Complete Tightwad Gazette” is even now perched on my nightstand along with “Your Money Or Your Life”, “Dogen’s Instructions To The Cook”, and copy of “Skuse’s Complete Confectioner”.
Dawn: If you liked the Maxed Out documentary, you might want to listen to this American Public Media series: Bankrupt: Maxed Out In America. It is available by podcast and at iTunes U. I found the segments to be a fascinating view of consumer debt.
Nina: I will have to check that out, thanks for the link
Frugalzen: How can you read FOUR books at the same time? Right now I have no books I am reading that pertain to frugal living, needing to take a break for a bit.
LOL..Dawn, I keep those books on the nightstand (the first three anyway) as reference books to look up things.
Skuse’s I got out as it has recipes for all sorts of Candies that aren’t made anymore. It’s an old book (12th edition, 1928) that is a reference book for Confectionery Stores.
Most of the recipes would have to be altered severely in order to be made commercialy today and meet the HACCP rules.I was looking to make some “Opera Creams”.
